Alaska Halibut Fishing

Best Alaska Halibut Fishing

Alaska halibut fishing is something that the residents take very seriously.

For one thing, this is a multi-million dollar industry to Alaskan fishermen, both commercial and the charter boat industry.

And for the tourist who loves sport fishing, whether from Florida or anywhere else in the United States, this is often the dream of a lifetime - to fish for halibut in Alaska.

The most common starting point for an Alaska halibut fishing trip is Anchorage. This is the largest airport in the state and has been known as the Crossroads of the World.

From Anchorage, the fisherman can travel to many different locations for halibut fishing; Ninilchik, Seldovia, Ketchikan, Homer and even Valdez.

Of course, to ensure a successful fishing trip, it is essential to have the proper fishing gear. A halibut road is essential; it comes equipped with large hooks and very study line that almost resembles rope.

Since most tourists don't bring a boat, it will be necessary to hire a fishing charter. If you're very fortunate, you may know someone - a friend or relative - who has a boat of their own and is willing to take you out for halibut.

You will need a fishing license - and nonresident licenses cost a bit - also, if you plan to participate in a halibut derby, you will want to purchase a derby ticket. It has been known that eager fishermen have actually caught a tagged halibut and lost their chance to win up to $10,000 - so remember that ticket!

If you do manage to land a "barn door" halibut (that's any halibut over 200lbs) remember to ask for the cheek meat. It is a delicacy that few are fortunate enough to have tasted at any point in their lives. Cooked over a campfire in a frying pan is my personal favorite!

At the end of your fishing trip, if you are among the fortunate, you will have a nice halibut to show for your efforts.

The very least you will come away with is a day of unforgettable memories and the satisfaction of having had a wonderful day, fishing in the waters of Alaska.
