Ninilchik Halibut Fishing

Ninilchik Halibut Fishing

Ninilchik halibut fishing is certainly among the finest in the Kenai Peninsula. Located along the Sterling Highway and the Ninilchik River, this tiny fishing village's name means "peaceful settlement by a river". Ninilchik was originally settled by the Russians as a fur trading center.

Unlike many remote fishing locations, halibut fishing in Ninilchik is accessible to most Alaskans - at least those who live along the highway system, from Fairbanks to Homer. All you need is a boat or a fishing charter and you are good to go!

If you are interested in stream fishing, Deep Creek and the Ninilchik River are nearby and are excellent fishing locations for salmon as well as trout.

One of the main areas to put your boat in the water is Deep Creek, where there is a boat launch and a camping area. This small stretch of beach turns into a densely populated 'city' every summer, especially during the Memorial Day weekend.

Accommodations for visitors include RV parks, campgrounds, bed and breakfastsl lodges as well as rental cabins and even an inn/hotel or two. The RV parks have hookups for your trailer and access to showers. The campgrounds tend to be a bit more primitive, but a great deal of fun as well.

You can take your own boat out into the waters of Cook Inlet - and many do - or you can connect with one of the many fishing charter services. The charter service will even provide all the tackle you will need to have successful day fishing for halibut.

Ninilchik has some of the best views in the state of Alaska when it comes to volcanoes , bird watching and nature tourism. St. Augustine, Redoubt, Iliamna and Spurr are located directly across Cook Inlet from this small community.

Several of these volcanoes have erupted within the last twenty years. The most recent have been Redoubt in 1989-1990, St. Augustine in 2005, and Mt. Spurr in 1992. Often plumes of smoke can be seen by fishermen while out for halibut on Cook Inlet.

Remember your fishing license - Alaska Fish & Game officers do patrol the beaches and rivers, and fines can be fairly hefty for noncompliance. If you are interested in participating in a halibut or salmon derby, it's also critical to remember your Derby ticket - otherwise, you will be like the gentleman who caught a tagged halibut in a derby - but neglected to purchase a Derby ticket.that's a very expensive mistake!!
