Sitka Alaska Halibut Fishing

Sitka Alaska Halibut Fishing

Located along the Inside Passage, this scenic Alaskan village has a great deal to offer, particularly in the area of fishing. Sitka Alaska halibut fishing is exciting as well as fun.

Sitka has a rich history. During the Russian period (1733-1867), Sitka was known as New Archangel and was the capitol of Russian Alaska. It passed into United States ownership following the 1867 purchase of Alaska from the Russians.

Many of the residents of Southeast Alaskans have both a Russian and Native heritage and along with place names, some of the Southeast Alaska families have Russian surnames - for example, Panamaroff, Petrikoff, and Kvasnikoff. Place names include such marine locations as the Shelikoff Strait and the Bering Sea.

Sitka is home to 24 places which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places - among them, Sitka National Historical Park, which commemorates the 1804 Battle of Sitka between the Tlingits and Russians. This was the last major conflict between Europeans and Alaska Natives.

As with other Alaskan locations that are known for fishing, Sitka has quite a few charter services for halibut as well as salmon.

Fishing for halibut is exciting. Halibut will often dive deep and the line whizzes out after them. The bait most commonly used is herring, but halibut skin (the white side) is also used, as is cut-up octopus and salmon gills. Halibut are bottom feeders and will ultimately 'vacuum' up anything in their path that they perceive as being edible.

It's wise when halibut fishing to wear a back support belt as well as a fighting belt - this is a belt which has a socket in which the bottom of the halibut pole fits, and is useful in preventing abdominal injuries when fighting to bring a halibut up from the depths.

Another tip that will be useful is simply this: Subdue or kill the halibut BEFORE you get near it. A 40 pound fish can do significant damage to a human - flatfish are a lot of muscle! Let me put it this way: do you want to eat the fish yourself, or would you prefer being fed because your body is encased in plaster?

Halibut fishing in Sitka Alaska can be the thrill of a lifetime. The scenery is among the most beautiful on the coast of Southeast Alaska, the people are friendly and if the weather is good, you are guaranteed memories that will make you smile.
